You may or may not know but Schwinn Bicycles brought back the Sting BMX Race complete. I happen to find out while browsing through Amazon. I went to Schwinn’s website and it’s not listed. As a matter of fact the Schwinn website doesn’t even have a BMX section. I’m not sure why.
The new Sting is based off the 1989 design but unfortunately the frame fork and bars are Hi-Ten Steel and not chromoly. There’s no geometry info but it says the bike fits kid’s between 4’8 and 5’4. Some of the old school inspired features are the frame pad, laidback seatpost, compe III style tires, period correct decals and brakes. The bike also has 3 piece cranks and it looks like it has an American bottom bracket. Price for the bike is $249.99.
I would’ve been cool if Schwinn at least made the frame with a better material like chromoly or even aluminum. Hi-Ten is not a good enough quality for the old guys and too heavy for the kids. There’s too much competition out there to be half stepping especially when it’s a re-pop. And with bikes being so hot and in demand right now, a brand like Schwinn should be going all in and making better quality BMX bikes. Just because it’s suppose to be for kids doesn’t mean the quality has to be subpar.
