Another Quamen is featured as Bike Of The Day! This time it’s their prototype BMX race bike. Mick Rich submitted this awesome build. I love the raw, rustic look of the build, it gives the bike so much character. Mick also submitted that carbon GT Power Series Ultrabox 2 that was recently featured on BOTD, so big shout out to him for keeping these treats coming!

Known mainly for its flatland bikes, Quamen shut up shop in or around 2013 but not before they had made a few prototype race frames. What you see here is believed to be the first or second of three known prototypes. I picked this up from the BMX Museum in 2019 and built it up in 2020. In keeping with the frame and still-visible stamping on the tubes, I went for the industrial look, choosing raw parts wherever possible. That includes the Odyssey race forks, Profile cranks and Standard bars. However, this bike is all about the frame! It’s made from 4130 “ProMoly” tubing from Plymouth Tubing Company out of Illinois and has been left in its factory raw finish, with all those lovely welds left for the world to see. The frame’s main design feature is the seat tube, which is offset by 5/8” as Quamen were experimenting with different ideas for rear-end stiffness. I also really like the dropout design, which looks like a dinosaur’s head! The top tube is 21” and the chainstays are 13.75 – 14.75”. It takes an internal headset, a 25.4mm seat post, 3/8 axles and a Euro BB. The bike gets ridden regularly, with the occasional track visit. A big shout out to all the BMX Museum members who helped out with the build, especially “FatGuy” and “MoonBootlover”, and also to Del at Delcals in the UK for the frame decals. Quamen may have gone out of business but this bike still carries the torch!
