The new GT Speed Series Prototype has some significant changes from the previous models. They’re going with a simpler, more streamlined design. The most notable changes are in the top tube and rear dropout.
For several years the GT speed series featured a slight arching bend on the top tube. It was a feature that was re introduced and made popular by the Intense podium back in the day. The top tube of the current Speed Series frames also includes a hydroformed gusset for added strength.
GT went back to a more traditional design on this prototype with a straight top tube, a gusset between the top and downtube and a gusset on the bottom of the downtube.
The rear dropouts on the current Speed Series features GT’s innovative Quick Change Dropout System. But the new prototype is using the more common enclosed style dropouts. What I’m really digging about their new dropouts is the amount of wheel adjustment space there is.
This particular prototype which is ridden by Lena Garcia has a Allyoogs universal chain tensioner system installed on it and it looks pretty interesting. It’s suppose to ensure constant chain tension therefore solving a recurring problem.
Advantages Of The Universal Chain Tensioner:
- Tensioner that absorbs the tight point and ensures constant chain tension thanks to the spring and stop.
- It permanently ensures the engagement of the chain in all the rear sprocket teeth, thus enabling the transmission of high levels of power.
- Change the front sprocket in a few minutes, stress-free !
- Tensioning the chain without moving the rear wheel.
- The original tensioners ensure simply the rear wheel position and no longer intervene in chain tensioning.
- Quick front sprocket change from 2 to 3 teeth (+1 and -1 minimum).
- The large size of the bearing reduces its rotation speed, considerably increasing its lifetime and load capacity. It’s diameter also limits vibrations.
- Â Available in 10 mm bolt and 15 and 20 mm axles
- Tensioner sprocket in anti-friction and silent technical plastic.
- The bracket fits between the frame and the wheel.
- Completely rustproof
- Easy to maintain and disassemble.
Now the Speed series is not coming with this chain tensioner but it is a pretty cool added treat! Of course some folks are gonna hate on the tensioner and it is pricey at $250. But I like innovative stuff like this in BMX. I may not personally use it but it’s good to know that there are brands pushing the envelope and evolving the sport. Also makes for sick Bike of The Day parts list feature 😉
