Yu Shoji‘s first place run during the UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Cup finals at Fise is legendary! I had to watch this clip like 20 times to understand everything he was doing lol. He is boss level good at flatland wizardry!
Today’s pro flatland riders are other worldly with their level of skills and I would love to see it in the Olympics. Flatland has been included to the UCI cycling discipline since 2018 but was not added to the Paris Olympics. Actually all 41 sports and disciplines that were suggested for the 2024 Olympics didn’t get included.
The UCI has the goal of full gender parity in terms of athlete numbers at the Olympics. But BMX Flatland may not have been included to the Paris game due to the lack of female participation. The good news is there are more females getting into flatland and now that they can strive to be UCI World Champions, the sport may grow even more!
BUT!!!
One of the most decorated flatland BMXers in the game, Matthias Dandois was at the Paris Olympics to set off the BMX Freestyle competition!
He also did some flatland demos during the Olympic games as well! That’s a great look! Maybe 2028 might see flatland in the Olympics? We’ll see!
