Today’s Bike Of The Day is a 2011 Supercross Mini and it’s looking real fresh! This one was sent in by Scott Melanson who built is up for his son. The custom paint job on the frame and fork really make this bike stand out. Be sure to give this bike a rating via the sliders below for the Bike Of The Month/Year charts.
My son saw a Full Suspension Bike in a DH Pit video, specifically Jordan Williams from last year, and absolutely loved it; partially because it was like Minecraft and also because of the color impact. So I screen shot it and designed my own techno-pattern to cut on my work’s vinyl cutter for application.
Completely stripped the original paint through a Powder-Coating source via Chemical Stripping. Debadged and Smoothed out the Fork with a bunch of Sanding, getting rid of nicks/scratches. Then did a Hot Chili Red Paint with a Red Anodized Spray Fade that transitioned from the headset back and down and then from the rear stays forward. I used a Bermuda Blue Metallic Paint to make the main color in the center, spraying directly overly the pixelated mask.
I probably spent somewhere around 5 Hours in Paint, 8 hours in Masking and Unmasking, then another hour in White Decal Application (all decals had to be made by myself since Supercross nor any of their official vendors had the design files for the EVO-iS, so I scanend them in and measured them/redesigned them to fit the bike from ones I heat removed from the original frame before chemical stripping). Funny enough, I cut a few of the white squares (especially for the back) to cover up some paint that had peeled and did the same technique for the forks/head area in painted blue vinyl. The Bright White was picked to match all of the Insight Accents and then I sealed everythign with about 5 coats of 2K Clear. ~Scott Melanson
