With the new year just days away I thought I’d bring you a list of the 2020 junior sized complete BMX Race bikes for under $600. For those that don’t already know, there is a wide variety of sizes for 20″ BMX bikes. You’ll find the most size options in the BMX race bike category. They can range from micro for kids 3.6ft-4.2ft tall to XXXL for riders 5’11 and up. The suggested rider height for a junior size bike is around 4.5-4.7. We’re talking kids that are age 7-9 depending on their height of course.
Differences Between 20″ Jr and Adult BMX Bikes?
(Scroll down if you already know about this)
The major differences between a Jr size and an adult (expert & Pro) size BMX bike is the Top Tube length AKA “TT”. The top tube length is the distance between the seat post and the head tube. A Jr bike’s TT is usually around 18.5 inches. An adult size BMX bike’s top tube ranges from a 20 inches all the way to a 23 inches. Top Tube length is based on the riders height so it’s basically the taller the rider the longer the top tube.
Another big difference is the bottom bracket height AKA “BB”. The Bottom bracket height is the distance between the ground and the bottom bracket. A Jr. bottom bracket is usually around 11-11.3 inches. And adult bottom bracket is usually 11.5.These height’s are not only for handling but they’re also for ground clearance.
Chain stay length is also a significant difference between Jr and adult BMX bikes. The chain stay length on a Jr is 13″ while the chain stay on adult BMX bikes can range from 13.75 to 17 inches. There are BMX riders out there that are over 6 feet tall. For those riders, the preferred bike would need to have a long chain stay length along with a long top tube length.
Basically, everything is smaller, shorter and lighter on jr size BMX race bikes but they’re still rolling on 20’s 😉
Although the bikes listed below are labeled as “racing bikes”, kids can also use them for recreational cycling as well. These bikes are more than capable of handling some cruising, wheelies and jumping. I wouldn’t recommend doing any BMX street or freestyle on this bikes tho 😉
All of the bikes on the list also come in Mini, Expert, Pro and Pro XL sizes.
Prices
There’s a bike that can fit every budget in the list below. If your kid is trying out BMX for the first time and your not sure they’re gonna stick with it you get the Mongoose Title for $299.99. It’s a great bike for a beginner. The frame is high quality and it can be updated with top notch parts. Then there’s the pricier Chase Edge jr for $539.99.
