Today’s Bike Of The Day is an classic 1982-83 Hutch Pro Racer sent in by Aaron Smith! This bike is so clean and that chrome/gold color combo always looks fresh! This bike was built as a tribute to my best friend, Lee Turner, who passed away too young when he was in his 20’s. Lee was one of the neighborhood “BMX pack” that I hung out with back in the early 80’s. He raced a Hutch Pro Racer, so when I found this frame I grabbed it up because I had been wanting to build one up as a memorial to him and present it to his family.
I looked at doing a full era-correct restoration, but the cost of vintage components is insanely high. I also wanted this to be ridden, not displayed. I chose components that would be fit to take out to any track and ride hard. I did choose to use several parts that Lee ran on his Hutch and stuck to the chrome/gold/black that he liked. The one-piece cranks, original Bullseye hubs, DiaCompe brakes, Kashimax Aero seat, and DX pedals (Haro clones) were all on his race bike BITD and I wanted to keep those the same.
To personalize it, I created a set of decals using silhouettes from some action shots I had taken of him at the track back when I was 14 or so. Those went onto the head tube and number plate. I also created the gold/black Hutch decals on the downtube.I’ll be giving this bike to his younger brother next month to keep until the grandsons that Lee never met are old enough to race it.
