PRESS RELEASE:
“In an unprecedented show of musical collaboration, 56 Philadelphia DJs will join veteran musical artists and organizations on Thursday, May 12 at 12:30pm for a community-friendly, mid-day event highlighting the city’s upcoming RapACon convention.
With the famed Independence Hall serving as a backdrop, the free event will highlight Philadelphia’s role in the annals of music history, and demonstrate the collaborative and community-minded principles of the upcoming RapACon Conference, slated for May 29th at the Park Avenue Banquet Hall.
RapACon, the brainchild of Curtis Sherrod of the New York-based Hip Hop Culture Center (H2C2), is a unique, all day affair, to include performances, seminars, exhibitions, competitions and costumed hip-hop tribute (cosplay).
“There’s nothing like RapACon,” Sherrod explains. “It’s a tribute to all aspects of musical legacy, hip-hop culture, independent artistry and community. But the center of it all, has to be the DJ.”
To solidify this, Sherrod teamed up with Philadelphia event producer Jos Duncan to orchestrate this historic event, bringing a contingency from the New York headquarters of the H2C2, local talent who will be performing at the RapACon event and iconic Philadelphia artists and DJs including Bahamadia and Parris “Parry P” Ellis, to join 56 area DJs — a nod to the 56 signers of the nation’s Declaration of Independence — for a free public performance and signing of the Declaration of DJ-Pendence, signifying the creation of a similarly united force in Philadelphia’s music community.
“We have to recognize the DJ’s importance as curator of the soundtracks of our lives,” says Sherrod. “We want to remind everyone how much joy and inspiration a live DJ can deliver.”
Sherrod continues, “This election cycle, the one thing everyone is realizing is that the people don’t want to be controlled. With art, music and performance, it’s the same thing. We need a revolution! A revolution against automated playlists and algorithms,” he exclaimed, closing with a clever twist on the phrase that sparked the American Revolution, “No waxation without representation!”
Other individuals and organizations expected to attend and support the event include DJ Jay Rock of The International DJ Cafe, DJ Mike Nyce of the Scratch DJ Academy, Aikan Entertainment Solutions founder Nakia Dillard, PhillyCam Membership and Outreach Director Antoine Haywood, East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention founder Yumy Odom, DJ Lisa Love, H2C2 Rapathon alumni, members of the RapACon Philadelphia advisory panel, hip-hop advocate Manny Faces of The Center for Hip-Hop Advocacy and selected participants from the upcoming RapACon event.
The Declaration of DJ-Pendence will take place in front of the iconic Independence Hall on May 12, 2016 from 12:30pm until 1:30pm. It will be free, open to the public and family-friendly.
The RapACon event will take place on Sunday, May 29 at the Park Avenue Banquet Hall, located at 4942 Parkside Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. This day-long event will include performances, seminars, a power networking event, cosplay, competitions and talent exhibitions including the world record-holding Rapathon and DJ-Con.
